The latest Budget may have delivered few major surprises, but at Una Vita Financial Planning, we believe stability and certainty are essential for people and businesses planning for the future.

Budgets often attract weeks of speculation about potential tax changes and what they might mean for our finances. This time, however, the Chancellor’s announcements were relatively predictable, with few major surprises. That is not necessarily a bad thing.

As a financial planning firm based in Oswestry, we know how important it is for our clients to make informed decisions about their money, both today and for the years ahead. Constant speculation and uncertainty can make that more difficult, particularly when people are tempted to act on changes that may never happen.

Our founder, Alasdair Coutts-Britton, believes the Chancellor, John Healey, had limited room for manoeuvre given the Government’s manifesto commitments and the state of the nation’s finances.

“I don’t think this was ever going to be anything more than a steady-as-you-go Budget because Mr Healey simply did not have many options available to him,” Alasdair said.

What does the Budget mean for households and businesses?

While the Budget may not have delivered sweeping changes, several announcements will be welcome news for individuals and businesses.

The increase in the threshold for business rates is positive for pubs, clubs and restaurants, while the continuation of the fuel duty freeze was widely expected, particularly with diesel at £2 a litre.

For savers, the decision to retain the £20,000 annual cash ISA allowance was less predictable but certainly welcome. Maintaining this allowance means people can continue to use cash ISAs as part of their approach to tax-efficient saving.

There is also £100 in energy support for people living in homes in Council Tax bands A to D in England, offering some assistance with household costs.

Meanwhile, speculation about bringing Capital Gains Tax into line with income tax came to nothing. We also already knew that most unused pension funds and pension death benefits would be brought within the scope of inheritance tax from April 2027.

Taken together, the announcements represent a relatively steady approach. For us, the important question is how confirmed changes affect your financial plans, rather than how you might react to speculation about what could happen.

Why stability matters when planning for the future

Financial planning is about making good decisions today that will benefit you years, or even decades, down the line. That requires a clear understanding of your circumstances, your objectives and the rules that may affect your plans.

When those rules are surrounded by uncertainty, making the right decisions becomes more challenging.

“Financial planning is all about helping people make good decisions today that will benefit them years or even decades into the future,” Alasdair said.

“That’s much harder to do if the rules are constantly changing or if people are reacting to speculation rather than facts.”

Last year’s concerns about potential changes to pension tax-free cash provide a useful example. Some people were considering financial decisions in anticipation of changes that ultimately never happened.

Situations like this can create unnecessary anxiety and may lead people to make decisions that are not right for their individual circumstances.

When people build a long-term financial plan, they naturally take account of the tax rules and incentives in place at the time. If those rules are repeatedly changed, it becomes harder to plan with confidence.

The same applies to businesses. Predictability helps organisations manage costs, make investment decisions and plan for growth.

The tax system needs to raise revenue, but it should also offer a reasonable degree of stability so that individuals and businesses can make informed decisions.

Focus on your financial goals, not the speculation

A relatively quiet Budget does not mean there is nothing to consider. Changes to tax rules and Government support can still affect your finances, and it is important to understand what the announcements mean for your own circumstances.

However, we believe it is equally important not to make significant financial decisions based on rumours or assumptions about changes that may never materialise.

Instead, take a step back and consider your longer-term objectives. Are you saving for the future, planning for retirement, thinking about passing on wealth or reviewing how your finances fit together? These goals deserve careful consideration, regardless of the Budget headlines.

At Una Vita Financial Planning, we help clients look at the bigger picture and make decisions based on their individual needs, rather than reacting to every new rumour or headline.

Our message following this Budget is simple: certainty matters, and a long-term approach remains essential to good financial planning.
